Gilman football star Cyrus Jones Jr. commits to Alabama

Cyrus Jones Jr. always strives to test his football skills against the best, from playing up an age group in Pop Warner to playing for No. 1 Gilman.

It will be no different in college. Jones is headed to No. 2 Alabama, which has appeared in and won more bowl games than any other program.

Jones announced his commitment to a national television audience at Thursday night?s Under Armour All-America game in St. Petersburg, Fla., during which he returned an interception for a touchdown.
?It?s Alabama. As far as football, you can't get any better than that,? Jones said before the game. ?It?s the top notch conference in America. My goal since I was a little kid was to make it to the NFL and if I?m going to have a shot at that, I?m going to put myself in the best position to get there.?

The Baltimore Sun?s Offensive Player of the Year and the Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year, Jones opted for the Crimson Tide, which will play No. 1 LSU for the BCS national championship Monday night, over more than 40 other offers. His top five also included Virginia Tech, Auburn, Ohio State and Maryland.

The first day for football recruits to sign their national letters of intent is Feb. 1.

Jones, a versatile 5-foot-10, 195-pound speedster who gained 2,365 yards and scored 24 touchdowns this fall, said he fell in love with Alabama on his first visit to the Tuscaloosa campus. He finally made up his mind last month after whittling his list to Alabama and Virginia Tech.

Although Jones played five positions this fall for Gilman ? running back, receiver, cornerback, wildcat quarterback and returner ? he said he will play slot receiver for the Crimson Tide.

?I just think I?m such an explosive offensive player and with the ball in my hands I need to be on the offensive side of the ball,? Jones said. ?I think I easily could play corner if offense doesn?t work out, but I?m going to go with my heart first and that?s to play offense. That?s what I started out as and that?s what I love the most.?

Jones said he picked Alabama, ?first and foremost [because] I just bonded most with the people down there,? especially assistant head coach Sal Sunseri, who has been recruiting Jones since his junior year.

?He?s a great guy, real enthusiastic, cares about his players,? Jones said. ?I trust him a lot and all the people down there that?s been involved in my recruiting. Not only is it a great football school but a great place to spend four years of college.?

Planning to major in business or athletic training, Jones said he likes head coach Nick Saban?s commitment to academics.

He also likes the possibility of getting on the field as a freshman.

?It?s hard to play as a freshman anywhere you go,? Jones said, ?especially a team that?s playing in a national championship, but I definitely think there?s a shot. Coach told me from day one that he?s going to put his best players on the field. Anybody who knows me, they know I think I can play with the best of them any day of the week. The hype doesn?t really bother me. I?m just going to go down there and play my game and try to get better.?

Jones? father, Cyrus Jones Sr., knows a lot about the recruiting process through his role as Dunbar?s boys basketball coach and his own experience playing basketball at West Virginia, but he kept a lot of opinions too himself through his son?s recruitment. He encouraged his son to make his own decision, so he pointed out some things but did more listening than talking.

In the end, he agreed Alabama was a good fit for his son.

?He?s always been a kid who challenged himself,? Jones Sr. said. ?He was always the one who was hardest on himself. My expectation of him is not necessarily for him to be a star or stand out the most, but it?s mostly based on effort. Whatever he did, he gave it his all. Along with the talent he has, I knew that was something that could take him a long way if he could understand that on the field and in the classroom you have to give 100 percent and he does.?

Jones Jr. won?t be able to attend the BCS championship game Monday night in New Orleans. He will get back to school and the Greyhounds? basketball team after missing a week for the Under Armour game, but he?ll be watching on TV ? a much more relaxed young man than he was a month ago.

?It was a big weight lifted off my shoulders,? he said of making his final decision. ?I enjoyed the recruiting process. You only get recruited once and you have the make the best of it and enjoy it, but I wanted to be smart about it and not drag it out. It was a blessing to know where I was going. I could just relax and focus on school and the rest of my senior year.?

Samsung to release white Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy Nexus (Digital Trends)

sprint-galaxy-s-ii-epic-4g-touch-white

Samsung is about to release a bunch of white phones. That?s right, white! But not just regular ol? white ? ?Frost White.? Don?t get too excited.

According to a press release out this morning, the robustly named Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch will be available in Frost White through Sprint staring on January 8, this coming Sunday. Customers can purchase the device at Sprint retail stores, through Sprint.com, or over the phone (1-800-SPRINT1). Like the black version of the Epic 4G Touch, the white model will go for $200 with the signing of a new two-year contract, or for customers who have an eligible upgrade.

Sprint will also offer the ?simple and practical? Samsung M370 flip-phone in ?Pewter Gray? starting on Sunday. That device only costs $20 with a two-year contract or ?upgrade.?

Moreover, Phandroid reports that a white version of the Galaxy Nexus will arrive at select mobile retailers in the UK in February. The lucky retailers will include Clove and MobileFun, and the device will sell for around ?500. So far, we?ve heard nothing about a white Galaxy Nexus making its way to the US. And considering how long it took Verizon to release the device in the first place, we wouldn?t recommend holding your breath.

As a side note: We?d like to request that Samsung, Sprint, and whoever else is in charge of naming these devices, goes with something that?s not so ridiculous as the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. It?s ever-so confusing, especially when the same basic device has different names depending on which carrier is offering it. We can?t imagine that does anything to help sales. And as a customer, we?d likely just go with the iPhone, since you don?t need a thesaurus to know what device you?re purchasing.

U.N. tries to reach 60,000 fleeing South Sudan violence (Reuters)

KHARTOUM (Reuters) ? The United Nations said on Friday it was trying to reach some 60,000 people who have fled tribal violence in a remote area of South Sudan and urgently need food, shelter and medical assistance.

South Sudan declared independence in July under a 2005 peace agreement with Khartoum that ended decades of civil war. But the new African nation has been struggling to end tribal and rebel violence that killed thousands last year.

Fighting broke out last week between members of the Lou Nuer tribe and the rival Murle tribe. Some 6,000 armed Lou Nuer members attacked the town of Pibor in Jonglei state bordering north Sudan on Monday.

U.N. sources said fighting had now almost died down after the army took control of Pibor but 60,000 people were now hiding in the bush or trying to return to their communities.

"The government says this is a disaster and we make every effort to reach them," Lise Grande, U.N. humanitarian coordinator for South Sudan, told Reuters.

"We are concentrating on five locations of which four we can only reach by air. Three of these locations have been burned to the ground," she said.

South Sudan Information Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin said the number of casualties was still unclear because officials and aid workers had not reached all parts of the affected area.

"So far, we have around 20 dead but we cannot say for sure because we need to assess first the situation on the ground," he said, adding that around 160 wounded were being treated in hospitals in the capital Juba.

Doctor Without Borders (MSF), the only aid group active in the area, said last week it had suspended its work in the area after two of its clinics were damaged by fighting.

Thousands of North Koreans gather in Pyongyang, North Korea, at Kim Il Sung Square to hold a mass rally in support for their country's policies and new leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012. The banner carried reads: "Let's uphold thoroughly Great Leader Comrade Kim Jong Il's legacy." (AP Photo)

(AP) ? Pumping their fists and chanting, tens of thousands of North Koreans packed the snowy main square of the capital Tuesday to pledge their loyalty to new leader Kim Jong Un as the campaign to consolidate his power deepened.

State television also aired footage of Kim's recent visit to an elite tank unit with family and historical ties that showed him interacting with ease with soldiers and carrying out inspections much like his father and grandfather did before him. Soldiers cheered and chanted his name as Kim made an inaugural solo trip to provide "on-the-spot guidance" in the first official documentary of the new leader shown on North Korean TV.

The succession campaign to install the third-generation Kim as leader has hastened since Kim Jong Il died more than two weeks ago. He led the country for 17 years after the death of North Korea founder Kim Il Sung.

North Korea's neighbors and the United States are keeping close watch on the younger Kim's rise amid uncertainty about how the country will manage a change of leadership during a time of sensitive negotiations over North Korea's nuclear program. Pyongyang and Washington had been engaged in discussions about offering food aid in exchange for nuclear disarmament when Kim died on Dec. 17.

Very little was known about Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s, before he was introduced to the world last year when his father made him a four-star general and a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party ? a clear signal the young man was his chosen successor.

North Korea has emphasized Kim Jong Un's heritage as heir to North Korea's founding fathers, and has underlined his physical resemblance to the late President Kim Il Sung.

In the documentary of his visit Sunday to a premier tank unit, he was dressed in a long, dark overcoat similar to the coat his grandfather used to wear. He is shown in an exhibition room lined with black-and-white photos, including an image portraying a young Kim Il Sung.

The footage also served to show the confident side of Kim, who chatted easily with soldiers in the documentary shown just days after the ruling party officially proclaimed him supreme commander of the 1.2-million-strong Korean People's Army.

Soldiers applauded and cheered as Kim approached, clapping his gloved hands. He leaned in to pull one man close to him to share a few words, leaving the officer in tears.

"Kim Jong Un's telling the world that even though he's young, he's in charge and capable of wielding a saber like this father did," said Kim Jin-moo, a North Korea expert at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses in South Korea.

Even the choice of the tank unit was a nod to history: The Seoul Ryu Kyong Su 105 Guards Tank Division was one of the first North Korean units to enter Seoul in the early days of the 1950-53 Korean War, according to military experts. It was one of Kim Jong Il's favorite bases to visit.

In Pyongyang, meanwhile, Premier Choe Yong Rim led a rally in support of Kim and the country's goals for the new year.

"We once again keep deep in our minds that the victory of building a powerful and prosperous nation is certain, as long as there is the ... wise leadership of respected comrade Kim Jong Un," senior Workers' Party official Mun Gyong Dok told the crowd, according to Associated Press Television News.

It wasn't immediately clear if Kim Jong Un was at the rally.

Crowds beat drums and carried large national flags as they paraded across the square. Some held placards calling for loyalty to Kim and for efforts to improve the economy. People pumped their fists in the air while carrying banners that read "indomitable mental strength."

Scores killed in Iraq bombings targeting Shiites (AP)

BAGHDAD ? An apparently coordinated wave of bombings targeting Shiite Muslims killed at least 78 people in Iraq on Thursday, the second large-scale assault by militants since U.S. forces pulled out last month.

The attacks, which bore the hallmarks of Sunni insurgents, come ahead of a Shiite holy day that draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from across Iraq, raising fears of a deepening of sectarian bloodshed. Rifts along the country's Sunni-Shiite faultline just a few years ago pushed Iraq to the brink of civil war.

The bombings in Baghdad and outside the southern city of Nasiriyah appeared to be the deadliest in Iraq in more than a year.

Thursday's blasts occurred at a particularly unstable time for Iraq's fledgling democracy. A broad-based unity government designed to include the country's main factions is mired in a political crisis pitting politicians from the Shiite majority now in power against the Sunni minority, which reigned supreme under the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein.

Some Iraqis blame that political discord for the lethal strikes.

"We hold the government responsible for these attacks. They (the politicians) are bickering over their seats and these poor people are killed in these blasts," said Baghdad resident Ali Qassim not long after the first bomb went off.

The attacks began during Baghdad's morning rush hour when explosions struck the capital's largest Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City and another district that contains a Shiite shrine, killing at least 30 people, according to police.

Several hours later, a suicide attack hit pilgrims heading to the Shiite holy city of Karbala, killing 48, police said. The explosions took place near Nasiriyah, about 200 miles (320 kilometers) southeast of Baghdad.

Hospital officials confirmed the causalities. Authorities spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release figures of the dead and wounded, who numbered more than 100.

The blasts occurred in the run-up to Arbaeen, a holy day that marks the end of 40 days of mourning following the anniversary of the death of Imam Hussein, a revered Shiite figure. During this time, Shiite pilgrims ? many on foot ? make their way across Iraq to Karbala, south of Baghdad.

Baghdad military spokesman Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi said the aim of the attacks is "to create turmoil among the Iraqi people." He said it was too early to say who was behind the bombings.

Coordinated attacks aimed at Shiites are a tactic frequently used by Sunni insurgents.

The last U.S. combat troops left Iraq on Dec. 18, ending a nearly nine-year war. Many Iraqis worry that a resurgence of Sunni and Shiite militancy could follow the Americans' withdrawal. In 2006, a Sunni attack on a Shiite shrine triggered a wave of sectarian violence that pushed the country to the brink of civil war.

"People have real fears that the cycle of violence might be revived in this country," said Tariq Annad, a 52-year-old government employee in Sadr City, after Thursday's bombings.

Attacks on Wednesday targeted the homes of police officers and a member of a government-allied militia. Those strikes, in the cities of Baqouba and Abu Ghraib outside Baghdad, killed four people, including two children, officials said.

Two weeks earlier, militants killed at least 69 people as a wave of bombs ripped through mostly Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad. An al-Qaida front group in Iraq claimed responsibility.

Iraq's political mess is providing further ammunition for extremists.

Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government issued an arrest warrant for the country's top Sunni politician last month. The Sunni official, Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, is holed up in Iraq's semiautonomous Kurdish region in the north ? effectively out of reach of state security forces.

Al-Maliki's main political rival, the Sunni-backed Iraqiya bloc, is boycotting parliament sessions and Cabinet meetings to protest what its members say are efforts by the government to consolidate power.

Gala Riani, a Middle East analyst at IHS Global Insight, said the political storm feeds into Sunni fears they could be marginalized by the Shiite-dominated government ? worries that Sunni militants are trying to exploit.

"The political crisis has set up a perfect scenario for Sunni militants to re-establish themselves," she said. "It's very sectarian in nature and gives them fuel for their fire."

While the political showdown appears far from being resolved, there are tentative signs of progress.

Al-Maliki met Thursday with the Sunni speaker of parliament, Osama al-Nujaifi, a member of al-Hashemi's Iraqiya party. In televised comments afterward, they described the talks as positive and said they will work to find a way out of the crisis.

Earlier, both men condemned Thursday's bombings.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland also denounced the "terrorist violence" in Iraq and called the attacks "desperate attempts by the same kind of folk who've been active in Iraq trying to turn back the clock."

Britain's Foreign Office minister for the Middle East and North Africa, Alistair Burt, urged Iraq's leaders to renew their efforts to break the political impasse.

Meanwhile, six Iraqiya lawmakers broke ranks with their party over the boycott by attending a parliament session. Ahmed al-Jubouri, one of the Iraqiya lawmakers who participated, said he did so to "encourage all blocs to sit together and open dialogue."

Samsung's Smart TV SDK reaches 3.0 with support for USB controllers, payment and ads

Even though all signs indicate Samsung will be joining the Google TV party shortly, it's not going to give up on its own existing Smart TV platform just yet. We don't know if it will run the two side by side as it has operated with Yahoo! Widgets, but the Korean manufacturer has announced it plans to release version 3.0 of its SDK January 5th. The new Samsung Apps toolkit supports mobile devices and TV sets, and lets developers build in support for remote controls, as well as USB mice, keyboards or gamepads. Of course, not all devs will work for free, so they're also adding a way for them to get paid through the built-in payment system or advertisements. Currently, Samsung claims 25,000 developers from 140 countries in its forums, but we'll have to wait until CES 2012 to find out if its products live up to the hype and attract more innovative software to the segment.

'The Hunger Games' In 2012: Our Five Forecasts

From the film's premiere to casting 'Catching Fire,' Hobnobbing takes a look at what to look forward to this year.
By Amy Wilkinson

Jennifer Lawrence in the "Hunger Games" trailer
Photo: Lionsgate

The past year boasted a cornucopia of "Hunger Games" highlights for fans to chew on, from the casting of Jennifer Lawrence as gritty heroine Katniss Everdeen to the first full-length trailer to the recent debut of Taylor Swift's soundtrack song "Safe and Sound." But as bountiful as 2011's harvest was, 2012 will offer a bumper crop of news from the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' dystopian tome as it finally hits theaters March 23.

Though our calls to Greasy Sae's Psychic Hotline have gone unanswered, we have a few educated guesses about what the new year holds for Panem's people. Read on for our five forecasts:

1. One more trailer
With just about two and a half months to go until the first film's debut, we'd bet a silver parachute that fans will get to feast on one more look at Katniss, Peeta and Gale before the tributes enter the arena. What another clip would include, well, we're less sure about that, but we wouldn't mind a closer look at life in District 12 or a more detailed glimpse at the other 22 tributes.

2. A full soundtrack announcement
Swift, the Civil Wars, the Decemberists and Arcade Fire's husband/wife duo of Win Butler and Regine Chassagne have all been secured for the T-Bone Burnett-produced soundtrack, but we suspect a few more artists will enter the fray before all is said and sung. I've already made my plea for Florence and the Machine, while NextMovie suggested acts like Snow Patrol and Regina Spektor for the much-anticipated album. We'll keep our ears to the ground for this one.

3. The film's premiere
Unless the apocalypse comes early, March 23 will be a blessed day for "Hunger Games" acolytes, as the flick will finally blaze into theaters. We expect more than a few faithful to camp out at their local cineplex for a midnight showing. And we're more than ready to drool over whatever confections Lawrence wears on the red carpet during the movie's premieres and publicity circuit.

4. Casting "Catching Fire"
With the second "Hunger Games" installment already slated for a November 22, 2013, release (and an Oscar-winning writer being eyed for the script), we expect the follow-up to begin shooting in mid- to late 2012 — which means a whole new slew of casting calls! Where are you Finnick, Johanna, Beetee and Mags?

5. First look at "Catching Fire"
Asking for a celluloid sneak would be a stretch, but we don't think it's completely inconceivable to think a first snapshot might find its way to the Web by the final days of 2012. Here's hoping the "Catching Fire" director (whomever he/she will be) isn't afraid to take a cue from "Breaking Dawn" helmer Bill Condon, who released the first photographic teaser for the final "Twilight" installments over Thanksgiving in 2010. Happy holidays, "Hunger Games" fans?

Daycare providers say kids are too inactive (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? Potential playground hazards, a focus on classroom learning and boring play equipment have children spending too little time being physically active at daycare, according to a survey of staff members at child care centers in Ohio.

"Physical activity is essential for kids in this age group for preventing obesity and for development," said lead study author Dr. Kristen Copeland, a professor at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Yet, according to the responses from the daycare staff, parents seem to value more traditional, classroom-based activities.

The researchers surveyed 49 child care providers from Cincinnati about potential barriers to kids' physical activity.

The children are "still learning how to skip, how to play with balls, how to share and take turns. But the teachers were saying they were pressured by the parents and somewhat by state early learning standards to emphasize classroom learning," Copeland told Reuters Health.

More than half of kids aged three to five years in the United States go to daycare centers, preschools or nursery schools, her team writes in the journal Pediatrics.

Although the teachers agreed that moving around is important, safety concerns were also a big barrier to kids' time spent running around and climbing.

Some of the teachers said that parents have asked for their kids to sit out of any vigorous activity to avoid getting hurt on the playground.

In cases when outdoor equipment had been updated to meet safety standards, the gear became boring and kids either tired of playing on it or they used it dangerously to make it more stimulating, the providers reported.

Daycare facilities couldn't always afford sufficiently challenging equipment, they said.

"Young children learn by moving," said Russell Pate, a professor at the University of South Carolina who was not involved in this study. "I am concerned that preschools and child care centers are placing a very heavy focus on the development of pre-academic skills."

This research "adds in a significant way to a growing body of information that indicates that the characteristics of preschools influence the physical activity levels of young children," Pate told Reuters Health.

Pate has shown in earlier work that children spend a very small portion of their time in daycare moving around vigorously.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Public Health Association, and the National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education recommend that preschoolers should be allowed an hour and a half to two hours of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day.

He said there are ways to encourage kids to exercise.

Teachers can incorporate movement into classroom activities, and daycare centers can stock up on mobile equipment, such as tricycles and balls, which entice kids to move.

Copeland added that parents should make sure their children dress appropriately to play outside -- no flip flops and warm clothes.

"My advice for concerned parents would be to ask daily, 'did my child go outside today? And do they go outside daily except in the most extreme weather?'"

Gartner: Next, Social Networks Will Sell Insurance, Become Banks

120104 Facebook squashes Prudential.jpgA recently published business development analysis by research firm Gartner looked into social networks' need for a more structurally sound revenue stream, and came to the conclusion that to maintain viability and competitiveness, they will soon enter the financial services industry. One Gartner analyst, Juergen Weiss, went so far as to predict that by the end of 2014, one of the major social networks - by implication, Facebook - would enter the business of property and casualty (P&C) insurance.

"Offering insurance products to their communities would be a natural extension of social media providers' financial services strategies," reads Weiss' conclusions, "and would allow them to capitalize on their extensive set of information they constantly collect about their users."

The predictions appear in the latest of a Gartner series of "Top Industry Predicts 2012" reports, using data compiled late last November. The report's editor, Kimberly Harris-Ferrante, cited "radical shifts in customer behavioral changes and buying habits... challenging many industries to reinvent their product development and sales and services processes to align with customer expectations and technology use."

The train of logic begins with Gartner analysts Stessa Cohen and Peter Redshaw, who cite a rapid increase in the number of online banking transactions. This increase has already driven banks to accelerate the establishment of their social presences through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and yes, if you can believe it, Flickr. (Banks share their family photos with their customers. No joke.)

"Traditional banks risk being disintermediated by social media websites that are increasingly looking for additional revenue streams beyond advertising," Redshaw and Cohen write. "This is a natural extension of the rise already seen in comparison and aggregator sites, especially for more commoditized products such as small loans, general insurance and credit cards. Examples of recent activity include the social payments startup Twitpay, the virtual currency Facebook Credits and the acquisition of the U.K. price comparison site BeatThatQuote by Google."

This "disintermediation," as Gartner's analysts put it, includes the enablement of online debt management services and peer-to-peer loan pools, all of which happens by way of social networks more than by stand-alone Web sites. To stay competitive, traditional banks (Gartner cites Citibank as the leader here) have launched services that reach their customers through Facebook, and enable them to conduct transactions through a social network rather than a Web site.

Here's where Juergen Weiss takes over. Weiss notes Facebook's Timeline feature as conducive for users to share their everyday events - getting married, getting a new job, entering retirement. Financial institutions are already using tools like Salesforce.com's Radian6 to search for these events as social net users share them. Weiss believes this could become the social net proprietors' opportunity to pre-empt those institutions from stealing away their own customers. Within just the next few years, he predicts, the social networks themselves (again, implying mainly Facebook, though perhaps Google also) will offer banking services, and then "naturally," insurance services as well, perhaps initially through joint ventures with existing financial institutions but not necessarily the bigger firms.

The Gartner analysts perceive this as a genuine threat to the existing insurance industry. In their report, they advise insurers to plan now for the commoditization of their products and services, implying that they should perhaps be sold through portals the way cloud service customers purchase bandwidth and virtual machines today. A ripple effect from this seismic shift could impact government regulators worldwide, whose inability to adjust to changing circumstances has already been blamed for such events as the collapse of the Central Bank of Ireland, and the sub-prime mortgage loan crisis in the U.S.

ASUS says bootloader unlock tool is coming, Ice Cream Sandwich update starts next week, GPS is hard, y'all

ASUS Transformer Prime

ASUS this morning teased some news regarding the locked and encrypted bootloader on its quad-core Transformer Prime tablet -- and it's good news. A bootloader unlock tool indeed is on the way.

As to why the bootloader's encrypted in the first place, ASUS says it was done for DRM -- digital rights management -- purposes.

The reason we chose to lock it is due to content providers' requirement for DRM client devices to be as secure as possible. ASUS supports Google DRM in order to provide users with a high quality video rental experience. Also, based on our experience, users who choose to root their devices risk breaking the system completely.

If you do choose to unlock the Transformer Prime's bootloader, you'll be voiding your warranty and all that jazz.

And in even better news, the anticipated update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will begin to push out starting Jan. 12. It'll be a worldwide over-the-air update.

Also, ASUS addressed concerns over the GPS on the Transformer Prime, saying the metallic unibody construction can essentially lead it to not perform as well as "a professional GPS device." We'll just let that hang out there by itself for a bit.

The full statement is after the break.

Partners for Pets adoptions spike this year | JCFLORIDAN

These five border collie mix puppies were brought to Partners for Pets Tuesday after they were found in a hollow tree stump.

As of Friday, about 408 pets from Partners for Pets found new owners from throughout the region during 2011.

This is a marked increase. Last year about 300 pets were adopted. This December alone, about 57 pets were adopted, as opposed to last December?s 35 adoptions.

Manager Debbie O?Quinn isn?t sure what to attribute the increase to. Some months were slow, but others picked up the slack. With a poor economy and finding jobs difficult for most, the numbers are not what she would have predicted.

O?Quinn said it may be the increased awareness of the public through the news and Facebook to the plight of pets being sick or overbred at some pet shops. There is an increase in the number of people turning to shelters to find their next family member.

Usually larger breeds, older pets and black dogs are the most difficult to place, but even these stereotypes were beaten this year. Lately more older and long-time residents have been adopted.

The shelter?s New Year?s resolution is a simple one.

?Adopt more,? O?Quinn said. ?Please spay and neuter your animals.?

Partners for Pets is a no-kill, not-for-profit shelter that relies on donations from the community to stay afloat. Some of the items on the shelter?s wishlist include cat litter, bleach, cleaning supplies, trash bags, old towels and blankets.

Ginobili leads Spurs past Jazz, 104-89 (AP)

SAN ANTONIO ? Manu Ginobili scored 23 points, 14 in the second quarter, to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 104-89 victory over the Utah Jazz on Saturday night.

Ginobili was 9 of 10 from the field, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range.

The win gave Spurs coach Gregg Popovich his 800th career coaching victory. He is the 14th coach to reach that milestone and third among active coaches behind George Karl (1038) and Rick Adelman (945).

DeJuan Blair had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Tony Parker added 14 points, and Tim Duncan 12 as San Antonio moved to 3-1.

Duncan continued to struggle to find his form. The 36-year-old forward followed up his 1-of-8 performance in Houston by going 4 of 13 from the field. He had nine rebounds.

Ginobili injected life to an offense that had gone cold in Thursday's 105-85 loss to the Houston Rockets. He began the Spurs' quick turnaround in the second period, scoring the first 11 points of the quarter. That propelled San Antonio on a 22-10 run that ended with Richard Jefferson hitting a 3-pointer with 5:26 left and gave the Spurs 17-point lead.

The Spurs were 7 of 8 from the 3-point line during the second period and were 10 and 16 for the game ( 63 percent).

Al Jefferson returned to the starting lineup for Utah, scoring 21 points with 11 rebounds in 35 minutes. Jefferson sat out Utah's 102-99 win over Philadelphia on Friday night with an inflamed right ankle.

But Utah shot just 35 percent (18 of 51) from the field and had only 11 assists.

San Antonio never trailed and built its largest lead at 27 points on Blair's basket with 9:52 left that made it 89-62.

Josh Howard, who flirted with signing with San Antonio earlier in the month before committing to the Jazz, had 18 points.

Forward Derrick Favors, who had a career-high 20 points in his first career start Friday, only had seven points.

Notes: Ginobili and Blair are the only Spurs to score 20 or more points in a game this season. ... Utah is 2-14 since the AT&T Center opened in 2002-2003 season.
