Many remember him as Fez in the popular sitcom, ?That 70?s Show?, but nowadays actor and activist Wilmer Valderrama has moved forward becoming more than just the shadow behind the funny character.

Beyond his participation in the Fox? successful TV show, the actor, just in the past year, has starred in more than six different TV series, NBC ?s ?Awake? and Fox? ?Raising Hope? begin some of the most prominent.

In the big screen he has also made a name for himself in films like ?From Prada to Nada? and ?Larry Crowne.?

Born in Miami from Colombian and Venezuelan parents but rised between Venezuela and the United States, Valderrama has made sure to keep himself relevant both in the entertainment industry and in the political arena, which he has entered in recent years, through his Latino roots.

?I think it?s, to me, that struggle and that drive that my dad had when I was growing up that really made me understand that we were here to do one thing. And that was to work and to maximize the opportunities that we had,? said the actor to NBC Latino. ?Go to those days makes me appreciate so much more, makes me even more hungry to do more.?

The activist, who serves as a spokesperson for This Shirt Helps, an initiative created to provide aid to different causes, has also worked hard as a co-founder of Voto Latino, an organization dedicated to bringing new and diverse voices into the political process.

Most recently, he was also part of the Latino inauguration celebration in Washington DC, where he hosted along with actress Rosario Dawson.

?I see a future politician here. Wilmer, when you choose to run, make sure I am on your campaign,? said Dawson after his speech.

To celebrate Wilmer Valderrama's 33th birthday, and take some time to remember and just laugh, we have put together a gallery above of some of his best moments as Fez in ?That 70?s Show?.

Despite revival, US economy still on life support

1 day

After four years of government prodding ? from federal stimulus spending to the Fed?s historic easy-money policies ? the U.S. economy finally?is showing signs of sustainable growth.?

But?it?s not out of the woods yet.

The hopeful signals are coming from a broad range of indicators - from upbeat reports on home and car sales to business investment and manufacturing orders. Those reports have raised hopes that the ongoing move to balance the federal budget with tax increases and spending cuts won?t dampen the emerging recovery.

?We think the U.S. economy will be able to power through that this year ? even with the drag,? said
?Tony Fratto, an economist at Hamilton Place Strategies and former Treasury official under President George W. Bush.

But when Federal Reserve officials wrap up?their two-day meeting Wednesday, they?re widely expected to continue to keep their foot on the gas pedal by extending their aggressive program of holding interest rates near zero.?

Though some critics think it may be time for the central bank to begin winding down its epic easy-money strategy, Fed policy makers have already promised to stick with it until the unemployment rate falls below 6.5 percent. ?

The halting pace of the recovery is expected to be highlighted Wednesday when the government takes its initial estimate of the growth of gross domestic product for the last three months of 2012. Analysts polled by Reuters expect the report to peg expansion at a weak 1.1 percent annual rate, down from a 3.1 percent rate in the previous three months.

But a basket of separate reports this week is expected to confirm the marked pickup in growth as the year drew to a close.?

Orders for durable goods jumped by 4.6 percent in December, the?Commerce Department said Monday, more than double what private forecasters had expected. Though many business managers complained loudly that uncertainty in Washington had left them unwilling to take on new workers, they were busy investing in new plant and equipment to keep up with rising demand from customers.

?CEOs may have been worrying about falling off the cliff but demand for big-ticket items still soared,? said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic?Advisors.

The report followed wider signs of a broad pickup in demand throughout the economy. Rising home sales, which began to pick up in the second half of last year, continue to push prices higher, helping convince reluctant buyers and sellers that the market has finally bottomed out. ?

Car sales jumped 16 percent in the fourth quarter of last year compared to the previous year, and are on pace for another annual sales increase. Automakers will report monthly sales on Friday and are expected to post another month of robust demand. The prolonged sales downturn during the Great Recession left behind an aging fleet of cars and trucks that buyers are now replacing. ?

Despite a lackluster holiday shopping season, overall retail sales in the last three months of the year were up 6 percent from a year ago.?Manufacturers are also seeing a solid pickup in orders for new goods. Lower energy costs -- the result of an ongoing boom in natural gas production?--?have helped them win bids against low-cost foreign competitors.?

But unemployment remains stubbornly high, as the latest reading, due this Friday, is expected to show. Economists are looking for a net gain of just 163,000 new jobs for the latest month. That?s barely enough to keep up with population growth and not enough to move the needle of the unemployment rate which forecasters expect to remain stuck at 7.8 percent.

To be sure, the Fed?s easy money policy is helping some households ? especially those with investments in the stock market. With interest rates at near zero, investors looking for a positive return have few alternatives.?

Stocks are up 15 percent since June. In January alone, investors sank $55 billion in new cash into stock mutual funds and exchange-traded funds, the biggest monthly inflow on record, according to TrimTabs Investment Research.?

Fears of a financial meltdown in Europe have faded. Last year?s worries about a sharp slowdown in Asia have eased for now.?And despite continued threats of political disruption in Washington, the long-running battle over the federal budget seems to be inching toward resolution.

On Monday, credit rating agency Fitch said last week?s deal to delay suspension of the country's debt limit have reduced the odds that it might strip United States of its AAA rating. Another rating agency, Standard and Poor?s, cut the U.S. debt rating one notch after the last debt ceiling debacle in July 2011 pushed the Treasury to the brink of defaulting on its bonds.?

But the recovery remains weak by historical standards. Four years after a recession, pent-up demand typically produces a strong rebound in growth and a?sustained hiring spree by employers. So far, that hasn?t happened.?

Most forecasters expect the slow steady pace of expansion to continue through this year and into 2014, with the unemployment rate gradually falling.?

The consensus sees GDP picking up to a 2.7 percent annual rate by the end of this year and 3.0 percent by the end of 2014, according to the latest survey by Blue Chip Economic Indicators. That pace is expected to pull the unemployment rate down to 7.5 percent by the end of this year and to 7.0 percent by the end of next year.

If that scenario plays out, it will be awhile before the Fed reaches its 6.5 percent jobless rate target and begins to throttle back its money-making machinery. ? ? ? ??

?At some point were going to have to wean ourselves off that kind of support,? said Fratto. ?And I think we?re going to see that this year. But we have to go through that ? and it?s going to bode well for the future.?

Crock Pot Thai Green Curry Chicken Recipe ? 6 Points + - LaaLoosh

Crock Pot Thai Green Curry Chicken

I LOVE Thai food and I love my crock pot, so this Crock Pot Thai Green Curry Chicken Recipe was the perfect marriage. Easy to put together, the end result is a delicious and filling green curry chicken that clocks in at only 6 Points + per serving. The only thing that I would do differently next time, is use fresh vegetables. The frozen Asian stir fry vegetables that I used tasted fine, but were a limp and soggy. If you prefer a more firm texture to your veggies, then I?d suggest using fresh vegetables instead of the frozen. Either way, this is still a super tasty and super easy Weight Watchers Crock Pot Recipe. Serve it over some brown rice or noodles for a complete meal. Enjoy!

A quick and healthy meal in the crock pot, this Thai Green Curry Chicken is just the ticket when you are craving the flavors of Thai food. But this healthier version is loaded with protein and fiber and offers a very filling serving for just 6 Points +.

Virginia Belle: Winter Home Improvement Plans

To say that we have slacked off lately in the home improvement department is a huge understatement. ?But it recently dawned on me that Spring would be here before we knew it (thank goodness!) and once the weather turns warm we will be?inundated with outdoor projects to maintain our yard. As a result, the inside of our home will get very little attention. ?So with Spring as a new deadline I'm now super motivated to do as many indoor improvements as possible. ?In true VABelle fashion, my first step in operation home improvement involved making a list.

Operation Winter 2013 Home Improvement:

*Redecorate the office
Right now our office is the catchall for all papers, junk, and clutter. ?I want it instead to be more organized, functional, and calming.

Paint purchased today! ?I'm going with Benjamin Moore's Stonington Gray.

-Paint the furniture

My office inspiration, thanks to Pinterest, includes white furniture with the gray walls. ?Right now our office furniture varies from tan to black with everything in between. ?I would love to paint it all white or cream but I'm not entirely sure how that would work out.

-Organize the office closet -Organize the office armoire
My ultimate armoire goal:

-Clean out the file cabinet

-Frame and hang diplomas

We only graduated 7 years ago, it's time to frame those suckers!

*Kitchen Window Coverings

Now that our family room doors have drapes, I really want to get coordinating Roman Shades for our kitchen windows in the adjacent room.

-Select the fabric

Right now I'm leaning towards Waverly Sidewalk Stripe in Blue Sky.

-Select the style of roman shades Love this example:

-Hang the custom shades

*Complete the Living Room

Moving our large armoire to the office was a great decision but it left us with a bare wall in our Living Room that needs to be filled.

-Find and buy a chair and end table
Currently a chair from the guest bedroom and a random ottoman are filling the void. ?I hope to find something affordable at an antique or thrift store sooner than later.

-Find and buy the perfect rug

*Complete Upstairs Bedrooms

-Paint both bedrooms more neutral colors
?The previous owners used the upstairs bedrooms as a nursery and a little boy's room. ?They picked great colors for the rooms at the time but now that we own the house they are screaming for a more neutral color scheme.?
Trust me, I'm realistic and know that at least half of this list won't be completed by Spring. ?But I'm motivated at the moment and if just a few projects get done, I will be satisfied. ?I hope to have some finished products to share with you all very soon. ?Comments and suggestions are always welcome!

Boy Scouts of America says discussing end to ban on gay members

DALLAS (Reuters) - Boy Scouts of America is discussing ending a longstanding ban on gay members and whether to allow local organizations to decide their own policy, a spokesman said on Monday.

The organization has been under attack from gay rights groups and some parents for discriminating against gay members and gay leaders.

"The BSA is discussing potentially removing the national membership restriction regarding sexual orientation," spokesman Deron Smith said in an email to Reuters.

"The policy change under discussion would allow the religious, civic or educational organizations that oversee and deliver Scouting to determine how to address this issue," the spokesman said.

City of the Month: Park City, UT ? Travel Smart Blog

Last week, the acclaimed Sundance Film Festival honored the top independent movies and players. Every year, its host, Park City, Utah, takes the best supporting role for the annual celeb-studded event.

Park City is topping all the travel lists (Forbes, Travel + Leisure, Ski Magazine, Conde Nast Traveler) lately surpassing destinations such as Aspen. Why? Accessibility, creativity, and activity!

Park City is a transformed old mining town with three ski resorts surrounding it. The quaintness of Park City?s Main Street is a thin veil for souvenirs and high-end retail. And don?t be deceived by the quaint fa?ade as the price tag for a vacation in and around this city is never bargain-priced. The four block historic strip is perfect for strolling or you can step into Robert Redford?s restaurant, Zoom, which offers some delicious local fare.

Accessibility

Nobody wants to spend the better part of a day traveling into a destination. Park City is more accessible than many of the top ski resort towns ? located only 45 minutes from The Salt Lake City airport. The international airport serves many airlines; Delta Air Lines has nonstop flights from more than 100 cities. Shuttles are a better choice than renting a car.

Hotels in Park City are numerous; from the big brand hotels to the local lodges.

Creativity

It has become a hub of culinary creativity with more than 100 restaurants and some truly inspired eateries.

If dining among celebrities in a beautiful mountain setting sounds appealing, you?ll want to check-in to the Waldorf-Astoria. Get a table at Slopes, a new restaurant deemed America?s hottest hotel restaurant in 2012 by Travel & Leisure.

The Waldorf-Astoria?s renowned bar and lounge, Powder Ice Lounge, features a 14-foot sculpted ice bar (it?s literally made of ice) and is one of the most popular photo-ops in the city.

Activity

Park City features three world-class resorts ? Deer Valley Resort, Canyons Resort and Park City Mountain Resort ? that offer three seasons of fun for everyone. (I say three because spring is a transitional season when the resorts close, the snow melts, and the preparations for the summer season are taking place.)

In the winter, the powder is abundant. Park City is home to the steep mountains where the US Ski Team trains attracting the world?s top snow sport enthusiasts, and a very chic and sophisticated crowd.

The Utah Olympic Park near Park City was the site of the 2002 Bobsled, Luge and Ski Jumping competitions. Today, visitors are treated to a guided tour of the park, athlete training sessions, 70 mile-per-hour bobsled rides, zipline rides, Quicksilver alpine slide rides, Olympic museum, an interactive museum, freestyle aerial and ski jumping shows on Saturdays at noon and a variety of camps for all ages.

In the summer and fall, the resorts convert their lifts and runs into over 400 miles of trails for biking and hiking and endless activities. Deer Valley?s Mountain Biking School offers lessons for those looking to improve their skills or just a guide for some of the areas best trails.

Obama supports French military operation in Mali : Voice of Russia

Obama had a telephone conversation with his French counterpart Francois Hollande to discuss the setting-up of a military mission in Mali, as well as drawing up a ?road map? that should result in elections and the restoration of democratic rule in the African country, according to a statement by the White House.

Malian troops advance eastwards

The Malian army backed up by the French troops on Friday moved into the town of Hombori, advancing east towards the Islamist stronghold of Gao.

At night the troops patrolled the area to check it for possible Islamist attacks, as earlier Islamist fighters blew up a bridge near the border with Niger.

French and Mali troops on patrol together

On the night of Friday, January 25th, French and Malian servicemen conducted their first patrol of the territory south of the town of Gao in the north-east of the country.

Earlier French military aircraft delivered high-precision strikes on the positions of the militant radical groups, including the region not far from Mali?s border with Niger.

According to information available, preparations are underway for an attack on Gao together with servicemen from Chad and Niger based on in Nigeria. Meanwhile, the member-states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are planning to hold an emergency session of the joint chiefs of staff on the situation in Mali in Abidjan on Saturday, January 26.

The deployment of African forces in Mali will be the subject.

?We Are Supposed To Be Truth Tellers?

Image (1) cnetcbs.png for post 17592A couple of weeks ago CNET was put into an absurd situation – they could not favorably cover a technology product because the company behind that product was in litigation with CNET’s parent company, CBS. I wasn’t all that interested in the story at the time. Reporters and bloggers are constantly pressured to write or not write about things by parent companies and even business executives in their own companies. CBS telling CNET what it could and could not write about wasn’t anything I haven’t seen before. I understand why CBS was trying to control messaging about a company that they were suing, although they certainly weren’t very smart about how they handled it. The Streisand Effect kicked in and not only did the product end up getting tons of extra positive press, but both CBS and CNET looked like idiots. Still, big companies do stupid things all the time. It’s a big part of why small startups are often so successful at disrupting them. What I don’t get is why CNET staffers have stuck around. They’re the ones who are supposed to be journalists and all that entails. They’re the ones I blame right now. I blame them because they’re the only reason CBS is able to get away with this. Every single journalist at CNET should have resigned by now. More than once at TechCrunch we made AOL extremely uncomfortable with things that we wrote. But they never ordered us to write or not write about something because they understood that not only would we not comply, we’d write a post about the whole thing. Our independence from AOL was so important to me that I negotiated an extremely odd provision in our purchase agreement that allowed me to disclose confidential information about AOL. It was their job never to give me that information. It was not my job to protect it in any way. If AOL had ever ordered me to remove a piece of content from the site for any reason I would have immediately written about it and disclosed the situation to our readers. And if I had ever ordered a writer to remove content I would have expected that writer to have done the same to me. In fact, one of the things I am most proud about at TechCrunch is the culture of independence in its writers. Many times I have been criticized

(AP) ? Hillary Rodham Clinton's thick-framed glasses aren't just a style statement.

Spokesman Philippe Reines says the secretary of state will be wearing the glasses instead of contacts for a period of time because of lingering issues stemming from a concussion she suffered in December.

The dark glasses with rectangular lenses have been conspicuously present since Clinton returned to work this month.

Reines gave no details on what types of lenses she is using

But he insisted Friday that with them on, Clinton sees "just fine."

He said Clinton has enjoyed reading humorous articles interpreting what each adjustment of her glasses means.

Science Reference: A New Thesaurus Created for the Astronomy ...

From IOP Publishing:

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) and IOP Publishing (IOP) have jointly announced the gift of a new astronomy thesaurus called the Unified Astronomy Thesaurus (UAT) to the American Astronomical Society (AAS) that will help improve future information discovery for researchers.

[Our emphasis] The AAS will make the UAT freely available for development and use within the astronomy community, while ensuring the thesaurus remains relevant and useful. Further development of the UAT will be undertaken by the John G. Wolbach Library at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in collaboration with the Astrophysics Data System (ADS) and the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) to enhance and extend the thesaurus to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of the astronomy community.

[Clip]

The thesaurus will be used in semantic technologies. With many thousands of resources being published each year in the field of astronomy, these kinds of tools are vital to ensure that researchers continue to be able to find relevant information quickly and ultimately improve the discoverability of research. This applies as much to data, web services and other resources, as it does to the bibliographic resources to which thesauri have traditionally been applied.

The work to combine the thesauri has been carried out by Access Innovations Inc, a privately held company that specializes in information management and database creation products and services.

A Thought I Had Today

Do you ever feel like the space between point A and point B seems too far apart?

I happened across this picture and started thinking about our choices in life.

We find ourselves staring down theHallway long hallway of options.

Sometimes we run down the hall without interruption.

Other times we stumble on the carpet and find ourselves rolling

around aimlessly with no sense of direction or balance!

We can look up and see the EXIT sign halfway in between where we stand

and where we want to be.

This is when we must decide.

Are we going to quietly place one foot in front of the other while we reflect on our situation

OR

are we going to unabashedly, noisily, and boldly take the

Emergency EXIT

all the way to a new beginning?

What do you do when you find yourself ambling along with the same ol? situation?

Are you steadfast, never changing direction

OR

Are you constantly seeking a different destination?

Bats split on family living

Jan. 24, 2013 ? For the tiny Daubenton's bat, the attractions of family life seem to vary more with altitude than with the allure of the opposite sex.

For more than a decade, a team led by Professor John Altringham from the University of Leeds' School of Biology has studied a population of several hundred bats along a 50-km stretch of the River Wharfe. They monitored roosts in Ilkley and Addingham, upstream in the market town of Grassington and higher still in the villages of Kettlewell and Buckden.

The researchers found that all Daubenton's bats in nursery roosts in lowland areas of Wharfedale during the spring and summer were females and their offspring.

Male bats were mostly restricted to a windier, Heathcliff-like existence in roosts at the top of the Dales.

But the researchers were surprised to find a small oasis of cohabitation in Grassington, sandwiched between the bustle of the women-only childrearing in the lowlands and the more relaxed lives of the bachelors in the highlands.

Professor Altringham said: "Low down the dale, the females appear not to tolerate males and we assume they won't let them in the roost. They don't want anything to do with them. High in the dales, all the roosts are bachelor pads. But in the middle, at Grassington, males and females live together -- the social structure changes with the environment"

"One possible reason for not finding males low down the valley could be that the mothers just want to avoid competing with males for food. It takes a lot of insects to make the milk needed to feed their young," Professor Altringham said.

"But it is also possible that the males choose not to roost with the females. When you look at the nursery colony in Ilkley, mothers and pups often have a lot of ectoparasites like ticks and mites. In a warm, crowded nursery, parasites can thrive, especially if there's less time for good personal hygiene. Parasites not only make life uncomfortable but can affect a bat's health. The males that live by themselves are usually very clean in their bachelor pads, so you can understand why they might not want to move in," he added.

At Grassington, which is deep in the Yorkshire Dales National Park but not as high as Buckden and Kettlewell, the bats have a completely different social structure. Both male and female bats live with the young throughout the spring and summer in roosts in the stonework of the old Dales bridges and in holes in ash trees.

"Females may roost as high up the dale as Grassington because they have these warm, cuddly males to bunk up with. This way, females use less energy keeping warm and babies grow faster," Professor Altringham said.

"In these marginal conditions, they may just tolerate a few males to keep them warm. Otherwise they kick them out. Why do the males co-habit if they are going to get parasites all over them? Well, that may be down to the usual answer: sex."

Although male and female Daubenton's bats usually live apart throughout the spring and summer, they meet when they begin flying to caves in late summer.

Professor Altringham said: "In and around these caves the bats gather in huge numbers to mate, in a behaviour known as swarming. This is clubbing for bats, with males displaying to females in lengthy acrobatic chases. As winter closes in, these caves will ultimately be their hibernation sites.

"There are nearly 2,000 cave entrances and hundreds of kilometres of cave passages in the Dales and these attract bats from all over Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and beyond for mating and hibernation. The males in Grassington may be giving themselves the opportunity to mate with the females late in the summer before they even get to the caves."

The researchers have built up a detailed picture of social and sexual behaviour by genotyping hundreds of individuals. The evidence gathered from this supports the theory that the Grassington males enjoy an advantage in mating.

"At Grassington, most of the fathers of bats born there spent the summer with the females. If we look at pups in Addingham and Ilkley, their dads were males caught when swarming at caves. So, as well as two different mating systems, you have distinct social groupings. A bachelor from Buckden is always a bachelor from Buckden. He doesn't pop down to Grassington to visit the females in the summer. His only option seems to be to go clubbing in the autumn," Professor Altringham said.

The Daubenton's bat, named after the 18th Century French naturalist Louis-Jean-Marie Daubenton, is widespread across the United Kingdom and specialises in hunting insects over water. Full-grown adults weigh only 7 to 12 grams, but they can live for 20 years or more.

"These bats are the size of a shrew but have a very different lifecycle. A shrew typically spends its entire life in a few metres of hedgerow, eats and breeds with a ferocious intensity, for a year if it is lucky, and then dies. In contrast, these bats lead a complex life over a huge area and females produce only one pup a year," Professor Altringham said. "This makes bats particularly vulnerable to the problems of habitat fragmentation and climate change."

The paper, which is published in PLOS ONE, was co-authored by Dr Ruth Angell and Professor John Altringham at The University of Leeds and by Professor Roger Butlin at Sheffield University. It was funded by a Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) PhD studentship to Ruth Angell, with additional support from the NERC Biomolecular Analysis Facility at Sheffield.

TechStars Grad Distil. It Lands $1.8M To Help Your Business Put A Stop To Bots, Web Scraping & Content Theft

106_Distil_CS5Distil.it, a cloud-based platform that aims to help businesses quash web scraping and other nefarious web-born fraud, announced today that it has landed $1.8 million in seed financing. Investors in the round included ff Venture Capital, Idea Fund Partners, CIT, Piedmont RIA, Cloud Power Fund and TechStars. What has investors intrigued? Distil.it co-founder and CEO Rami Essaid believes that Distil.it is the first Content Protection Network (CPN) that helps businesses identify and block content scraping and data theft. Its technology allows it to scan your website’s traffic and make realtime decisions, distinguishing between your customers and bots, while accelerating your content through 15 global nodes to reduce server loads and improve site speed. A part of the inaugural class of TechStars Cloud in early 2012, Distil.it’s CEO tells us that the company has been experiencing 35 percent month-over-month revenue growth over the last four months, part of what has made it so appealing to investors. There’s also the fact that this has become a growing problem for businesses. When someone scrapes and duplicates content, they steal visitors, SEO rank and revenue. Not cool, bro. Not cool. So, Distil’s Content Protection Network helps companies stop this, identifying and elbow-dropping on malicious content scraping and theft. As to what makes Distil.it different: Essaid tells us that, unlike other solutions, the startup doesn’t rely on rate limiting to identify and stop bots, instead using “sophisticated code injections” to verify a connection’s identity and find automated agents. It then applies a layer of machine learning that enables it to discern the difference between bot traffic and human on a site-to-site basis. The biggest differentiator from sites like Siteblackbox and Sentor, he says, is that when the site catches a malicious bot in action, it builds a signature to ensure that it’s never allowed to return. Distil.it then aggregates those signatures across all of its customers, crowdsourcing bot DNA so that every business gets to benefit from each bot captured. A digital community service. With the new capital in tow, going forward, the startup plans to expand its cloud network footprint, spinning up four new data centers over the next quarter. It also is working to add more robust analytics to its user portals — tools that will help customers better identify who is trying to attack them, while giving them ways to monetize based on that traffic. WellPoint profit beats, but 2013 outlook "prudent"

(Reuters) - WellPoint Inc reported a higher-than-expected fourth-quarter profit on Wednesday, but the second-largest U.S. health insurer said it was taking a "prudent" view of 2013 as it faces industry reform.

WellPoint, which sells private health insurance to businesses and individuals and also provides government insurance for the elderly and the poor, is preparing for a round of changes resulting from the U.S. Affordable Care Act.

Later this year, states and the federal government will begin selling health insurance on exchanges for 2014, and new insurance taxes are on the way. Pressure on prices for medical services is also a concern for insurers.

WellPoint said that given the "fluid and dynamic" market over the next 18 to 24 months, it expected a 2013 net profit of at least $7.60 per share, including the costs of integrating its recent acquisition of smaller competitor Amerigroup.

Analysts on average have been expecting $7.98 a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. It was not immediately clear if the two numbers are comparable.

"It's lighter than we thought, but it's also including Amerigroup's integration costs," Leerink Swann analyst Jason Gurda said, so it was not clear that investors would be disappointed by the outlook.

He also said the company's management changes might be behind the conservative forecast. WellPoint is currently being run by an interim chief executive officer, John Cannon, who took over following the abrupt resignation of Angela Braly in August. The company is in the midst of a search for a new CEO.

TAXES BOOST PROFIT

The company said that fourth-quarter net profit had risen to $464.2 million, or $1.51 per share, helped by an income tax settlement and investment gains.

WellPoint, which included Amerigroup figures in its earnings report for the first time, said it had 36.1 million members as of December 31, up 5.5 percent from a year earlier.

It said it expected membership to drop in 2013 to a range of 35.3 million to 35.5 million.

Excluding the tax settlement, investment gains and other special items, the company said earnings had increased to $1.03 per share from 99 cents a year earlier.

On that basis, analysts on average had been expecting a profit of 95 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

WellPoint said that lower-than-anticipated medical costs in its private insurance business, stable membership numbers and strong operating cash flow helped earnings during the quarter. It said its fourth-quarter tax rate had been abnormally low because of the settlement with the Internal Revenue Service.

Revenue for the quarter rose to $15.27 billion from $15.18 billion a year earlier.

WellPoint's results followed those of the larger rival UnitedHealth Group Inc , which last week reported a slight drop in net income and said the next two years had the potential for growth and opportunity.

Owl monkeys who 'stay true' reproduce more than those with multiple partners

Jan. 23, 2013 ? Breaking up is hard to do -- and can be detrimental to one's reproductive fitness, according to a new University of Pennsylvania study.

Focusing on wide-eyed, nocturnal owl monkeys, considered a socially monogamous species, the research reveals that, when an owl monkey pair is severed by an intruding individual, the mate who takes up with a new partner produces fewer offspring than a monkey who sticks with its tried-and-true partner.

The findings underscore how monogamy and pair-bonds -- relatively rare social formations among mammals -- can benefit certain individuals, with potential implications for understanding how human relationship patterns may have evolved.

Eduardo Fernandez-Duque and Maren Huck report on the research in PLOS ONE. Fernandez-Duque is an associate professor in Penn's Department of Anthropology. Huck completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Fernandez-Duque's laboratory and is now a professor at the University of Derby in the United Kingdom.

Since 1997, Fernandez-Duque and colleagues have monitored an owl monkey population in a portion of Argentina's Chaco region. Their behavioral observations, demographic data and physiological sampling have provided a wealth of information on the animals.

"We have managed over the years to have quite significant sample sizes for a study of wild non-human primates," Fernandez-Duque said. "These findings are possible because we have intense demographic monitoring year-round that allows us to notice when a male is missing, when a female is missing or when there's a new adult in the group. We couple this with intense behavioral monitoring that allows us to document the details of fights or the whole process of mate replacement."

The current study amasses data from 16 years of observation of 18 owl monkey groups, a total of 154 animals. Owl monkeys live in monogamous groups consisting of an adult male, an adult female and their offspring. The juveniles disperse from the group around age 3 or 4.

In 2008, Fernandez-Duque and colleagues published a paper reporting, for the first time, the presence of a so-called "floater" individual, which attacked the male member of an owl monkey pair and essentially replaced him as a mate and infant-care provider.

The Penn team now demonstrates that this usurping of mates by both male and female floaters is a common occurrence. The researchers documented 27 female and 23 male replacements in the groups they observed.

The replacements often involved dramatic fights, some of which ended fatally for the evicted individual.

"These are high-stakes competitions for reproductive positions," Fernandez-Duque said.

By following pairs and observing replacements, Fernandez-Duque and Huck show that having a partner evicted harms the reproductive success of the remaining mate. Owl monkeys with one partner produced 25 percent more offspring per decade than those with two or more partners.

"What we're showing is that if you manage to stay with the same partner you produce more infants than if you're forced to change partners," Fernandez-Duque said.

The reason for this significant impact on the reproductive success of the remaining partner is not yet completely clear, but the researchers surmise that it may have to do with a delay in reproduction due to the fact that female owl monkeys in Argentina typically only conceive between March and May. It's also possible the delay occurs because the two individuals take time to assess one another before reproducing, given the significant commitment to infant care that both males and females make.

The results demonstrate that, for owl monkeys, long-term monogamy and pair-bonding improves reproductive fitness. The finding helps explain previous research by Fernandez-Duque's group, which has shown that male owl monkeys invest significantly in raising their offspring.

"Monogamy makes sense for these primates, because the male who sticks to a female is certain about the paternity of the young, and so he invests in their care," he said. "The female benefits from shared provisioning of care which may help her reduce the burden of pregnancy and lactation."

Fernandez-Duque's studies of owl monkeys in Argentina and his collaborative research on monogamous titi and saki monkeys of Ecuador are helping scientists understand the ecological and biological factors that gave rise to pair-bonds in non-human primates and in humans.

"There's some consensus among anthropologists that pairs-bonds must have played an important role in the origin of human societies," Fernandez-Duque said. "Call it love, call it friendship, call it marriage, there is something in our biology that leads to this enduring, emotional bond between two individuals that is widespread among human societies."

The research was supported by the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the L.S.B. Leakey Foundation, the National Geographic Society, the National Science Foundation, the University of Pennsylvania Research Foundation, the Zoological Society of San Diego and the German Science Foundation.

Why second acts matter

Scoring a 'first' is worthy of celebration. But second acts, second tries, and second chances are crucial. First, they correct for first-time flaws. Second, they prove that firsts were no fluke.

On Dec. 14, 1903, Wilbur Wright went airborne. For three seconds. Something promising happened, but was it really flying? The next attempt, on Dec. 17, piloted by his brother Orville, was only nine seconds longer. But it was proof that what happened on Dec. 14 was real. A photograph of that second try shows Wilbur running alongside the flying machine. And it was definitely flying. Dec. 17 is the date remembered for the first flight.

F. Scott Fitzgerald may have morosely declared that there are ?no second acts in American life,? but second acts are crucial. They let us correct mistakes and try again. Winning all the marbles the first time might be beginner?s luck. Doing it a second time proves you are an ace. Besides, science requires that results be reproducible to be valid.?

This is not a knock on first-place finishers. A winner deserves a victory lap and a shower of ticker tape. But second-placers are no slouches. With that in mind, here are a few people to consider first-place second-placers:

?Tenzing Norgay, the second person to summit Mt. Everest. The Nepalese climber was only a few feet behind Edmund Hillary in 1953, a triviality after ascending 29,000 feet. Both men supported each other. Neither would have made it alone.

?Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon. He actually spent more time on the lunar surface than Neil Armstrong and seemed to have more fun.

?Alfred Russel Wallace, who developed the theory of evolution at the same time as Charles Darwin. Darwin published first but acknowledged that Wallace had the same ideas, calling the theory ?your own and my child.?

?Susan Boyle (this isn?t my speciality but trust me, I looked it up). The British singer was runner-up in ?Britain?s Got Talent 2009? but has sold more than 10 million copies of her debut album. Anybody remember who won first place in that contest?

?McKayla Maroney, the American gymnast who won a silver medal in the London Olympics. Her fall cost her the gold. Her ?McKayla is not impressed? expression became an Internet sensation. She embraced it with good humor and even got to make the face with President Obama.

In a Monitor cover story, Robert A. Lehrman looks at presidential second terms. The common notion is that Fitzgerald was right, that there?s a ?second-term curse.? But consider that along with Watergate, Iran-contra, and the Lewinsky scandals came the US-China breakthrough, the thaw in the cold war, and the late-?90s economic boom. Besides, the judgment of history is constantly being revised. Thomas Jefferson was considered a failure at the end of his second term. Harry S. Truman ended his presidency with a historically low approval rating. Both are now remembered as great presidents.

Second-termers can be lame ducks. But freed from the need to campaign for reelection they have the opportunity to rise above partisanship. That alone would prove that the trust voters twice placed in a president was fully merited.

Second acts are crucial in American life. Seconds allow for improvement. And they prove that firsts weren?t flukes.

Santander eyes ?2 billion bid for NAB UK assets: paper

LONDON (Reuters) - Santander is considering making a 2 billion pound ($3.2 billion) bid for National Australia Bank's UK business to accelerate its British expansion, the Sunday Times reported citing unnamed sources.

The British newspaper said executives in London and Madrid have been looking at a deal since the collapse of talks to buy a network of 316 branches from Royal Bank of Scotland last October.

Santander declined to comment on the report. A spokesman for its British business said the bank was expanding organically.

NAB scrapped plans to sell 337 Clydesdale and Yorkshire bank branches last April, having struggled to attract a buyer, and instead announced plans to shrink the business, cutting 1,400 jobs.

NAB's Chief Executive Cameron Clyne has come under pressure from shareholders to sell the loss-making business, which has been hit by rising bad debt charges in its real estate portfolio. However, he has maintained that he will not resort to a "fire sale" of the assets.

The Spanish bank is keen to bulk up its British arm ahead of a planned listing of the business in London. The Clydesdale and Yorkshire banks may be an attractive target because of their strong position in small to medium enterprise lending, where Santander is keen to expand.

Santander UK could afford the acquisition, having saved $2.7 billion from the collapse of the RBS deal. Santander pumped 4.5 billion of equity capital into its UK business in August 2010 to fund growth.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, Santander UK's Chief Executive Ana Botin said the planned IPO of Santander UK - which could value the business at about 10 billion pounds - may be launched with months.

However, she cautioned the bank would require more clarity on Britain's proposals to make banks ring-fence their retail banking operations form their investment banking activities.

Chastain films take top 2 spots at box office

NEW YORK (AP) ? Jessica Chastain easily outmuscled Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mark Wahlberg over the weekend, topping the box office with both her supernatural horror film "Mama" and the Oscar-nominated Osama bin Laden hunt thriller "Zero Dark Thirty."

"Mama" opened well above expectations with a box-office topping $28.1 million for Universal Pictures, according to studio estimates Sunday. Chastain also held the second spot with "Zero Dark Thirty," for which she's nominated by the Academy Awards for best actress. In its second week of wide release, "Zero Dark Thirty" took in $17.6 million.

The films' strong performances had the remarkable effect of making Chastain an unlikely box-office queen out of a chameleon-like actress that even fans of "Mama" might have trouble picking out of a lineup. Chastain, whose credits range from Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" to "The Help" (for which she was also Oscar nominated), even accomplished the rare feat by besting a couple of more traditional box-office stalwarts.

Schwarzenegger's post-governorship comeback got off to a terrible start. His action flick "The Last Stand" opened with just $6.3 million for Lionsgate, one of the worst debuts for the brawny 65-year-old star. The film came in 10th.

Though Schwarzenegger co-starred in "The Expendables 2," which opened with $28.6 million in August, "The Last Stand" is his first proper starring vehicle since exiting the California governor's seat in January 2011.

The Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe-led New York crime film "Broken City" didn't fare much better. The Fox release premiered with $9.1 million.

Instead, audiences flocked to the PG-13-rated "Mama," which bore the imprimatur of the well-respected fantasy-spinner Guillermo Del Toro, a producer.

"Never underestimate the drawing power of a PG-13 horror film," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com.

Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal Pictures, acknowledged the apparently limitless appetite for such a film, if done right: "That's why we did it," she said.

"It's a fun film without a lot of extraordinary violence," said Rocco, who added she would have been "thrilled" with a debut in the mid- to high-teens. "Young people like scary stuff."

With Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Hollywood will get a virtual four-day weekend at the box office. Universal is predicting "Mama" to finish with $33.2 million by the end of Monday.

Though horror films generally are a hit with male audiences, "Mama" appealed strongly to females, who made up 61 percent of its moviegoers. That was key on a weekend filled with male-driven movies, including "Broken City," ''The Last Stand," Warner Bros.' "Gangster Squad" and the Weinstein Co.'s "Django Unchained."

"It's an incredibly competitive marketplace for testosterone-driven films," said Dergarabedian.

The Weinstein Co.'s "Silver Linings Playbook," nominated for eight Academy Awards including best picture, expanded to its largest number of theaters in its 10th week of release. Playing in 2,523 theaters, a jump of 1,713 theaters, the David O. Russell film took in $11.4 million on the weekend ? the same in which its star Jennifer Lawrence hosted "Saturday Night Live" ? for a cumulative of $55.3 million.

Also nominated for best picture, Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," in its fourth week became the director's biggest box-office hit. It surpassed his previous film, "Inglourious Basterds," by adding $8.2 million for a domestic total of $138.4 million.

In Mali, French forces move north amid plea for faster African deployments

Malian troops have entered the key garrison town of Diabaly after French airstrikes pushed out Islamist rebels. But many residents wonder if they're gone for good.?

?As Malian troops enter Diabaly, a garrison town of 35,000 recently abandoned by rebels in response to French air strikes,?France?s foreign minister has warned his African counterparts that "African friends need to take the lead" in the ongoing military campaign against Islamist rebels in Mali.?

The Malian Army?s inability to hold Diabaly was just one of a string of military setbacks that prompted France to mobilize more than 2,000 troops on the ground and to call for West African nations to accelerate troop deployments to Mali. Islamist rebels gained control of the town ? just 270 miles from the capital city of Bamako ? only days after France intervened Jan. 11 to stem an ambitious rebel push southward to the town of Konna, in central Mali. Diabaly, with its relative proximity to Bamako,?has since come to be viewed as a second frontline of a conflict that was originally envisioned as a limited air campaign to support Malian troops.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius made his plea at a special Mali summit in neighboring Ivory Coast on Saturday, where West Africa regional bloc ECOWAS met to iron out the details of sending West African troops to Mali. Troops from Nigeria and Togo have already arrived in Bamako, but they represent just a fraction of the approximately 3,000 West African troops slated to join the fight. Most agree, however, that it will be weeks before more African boots are on the ground and start replacing French ones.

Until then, French troops find themselves bearing the brunt of of the?military responsibility. On Saturday, The Monitor watched a convoy of armored vehicles and lighter trucks prepare to move toward the town of Niono, northeast of Bamako. French troops were digging trenches ? replete with sandbags and heavy weaponry ? as far south as Sarakala, a tiny village about 65 miles south of Diabaly.

Until yesterday, the French presence in Niono was ?virtually nonexistent, and the checkpoint on the road to Diabaly was manned by Malian troops keeping current by watching news on TV. Some of the people passing through were farmers accessing their fields, while others were among those taking the opportunity to flee Diabaly in the wake of the rebel departure. Several residents confirmed that the Islamist rebels had not allowed anyone to leave the town ?while it was under their control, part of an effort to embed themselves within the population to deter French use of air power.

Diabaly resident Fatoumata Shonta was able to escape by telling the rebels that she was going to her onion gardens. Once there, she snuck out on a flatbed truck used for transporting rice with her baby girl and toddler son in tow. Ms. Shonta left with only a small bucket of items: sandals, a t-shirt, and a bit of food.

French forces indicated that the situation in Diabaly might still be tenuous. "In theory, there are few or no rebels there, but that needs to be confirmed, so we will wait to see what happens in the days to come over there," Lt. Col. "Frederic," a French Foreign Legion spokesman in?Mali, told the Associated Press. His family name was not given in accordance with standard procedure.?

Many of those fleeing Diabaly and arriving in Niono were quick to stop and make phone calls, capitalizing on their first chance to contact friends and family since the rebel takeover. The cellular network in the city had been down since Tuesday, frustrating citizens and journalists alike, as contradictory reports leaked out of the unreachable town.

But even amid the news that Diabaly is no longer under rebel control, many in nearby Niono wonder if the Islamists are gone for good. The surrounding terrain, a mix of green scrub and desert, offers considerable mobility to insurgents, and in the words of mayor Moriba Coulibaly, ?there are lots of ways into Niono.??
