Starting A Business: Selling and the Cell: Getting From Proximity ...

QAmichaelzeto_Body.jpgby Erin McDermott.

?

Have you taken a small business up on an offer via your cellphone? You very well might soon, thanks to new efforts to engage customers through location-based mobile technology. Michael Zeto, CEO and founding partner of Atlanta-based Proximus Mobility, is at the forefront this new frontier, dubbed hyper-local proximity marketing. Recently, he talked with business writer Erin McDermott about what small businesses can do with this intriguing new media to increase their revenue.

?

?

QAmichaelzeto_PQ.jpgEM: In layman?s terms, can you explain hyper-local proximity marketing and how it works?

MZ: Hyper-local proximity marketing is really the distribution of relevant, location-specific advertising and marketing content to consumers? mobile devices in and around the point of purchase or that critical decision-making moment.

A consumer interacts with a call to action?some signage possibly that says to receive special offers turn on their Bluetooth or WiFi. They do that if it?s not already enabled, and in most cases one or the other would be enabled. And then they receive information when they?re in range of an access point or in an ?offer zone.???

EM: There are plenty of people who aren?t necessarily comfortable with a lot of technology when it comes to their privacy. Proximus is doing it another way: The customers need to opt in, correct?

MZ: Yes. Everything we do takes that into account and it?s all opt-in based. So regardless of which one of our offerings you?d choose, there will be some step that you?ll need to do to opt in ensuring that we stay in line with all of the privacy regulations.

?

EM: What works in terms of how a business can get clients and customers to want to enable or opt-in to that contact??

MZ: It comes down to the content and the relevance of the offer. It doesn?t have to be a giveaway?it just needs to be something that is relevant to the business that would give value to a consumer out there. It could be a two-for-one coffee or it could be a special ingredient for how they make one of their better-selling items in a restaurant?something that would be of value for somebody to know. We?ve seen people leverage proximity marketing to increase per-head spending, increase repeat visits back to a location, and increase the sale of higher margin items to the consumers, which adds to the business?s bottom line.

?

EM: How have people been getting those messages across? What have been some creative uses in how they?re connecting with customers?

MZ: The first step is that call to action, so it?s about letting people know there?s something available for them. In some cases, it?s at events and they?ll have street themes and T-shirts with a catchy saying. In some cases, it?s signage like poster boards or a banner flashing across a digital sign.

?

EM: In terms of the actual message, what have businesses been sending that you think have been effective?

MZ: People always want offers. So for the business owner, for the ad to be effective, the offers need to be something that provides a benefit to the consumer and to the business itself. That?s why we try to promote the increase in per-head spend, where it?s not a giveaway offer of something they?d normally buy. You offer them an appetizer along with the purchase of an entree.

?

Or, for example, a hair salon giving a clip of a new hairstyle that?s been seen on a Hollywood celebrity. The hair salon?s saying ?If you want your hair to look like Jennifer Aniston, get your hair cut here. And, oh, by the way, she holds it together with Aveda products.? So they?re not only giving the consumer something valuable?which is what?s new in the world of hairstyles they might want?but they?re also promoting the salon and an up-sale of products, which has a very high margin to it. And in some cases, the company that provides the product to the salon may actually pay to place it there as an advertisement.

?

EM: On the business side, how can someone determine the effectiveness of the technology?

MZ: When you leverage mobile, it?s pretty measurable. With our solution, you know if somebody has opted in, and if the content has been browsed on their phones or if they?ve viewed 18 pages of ad content, and they?ve looked at it for the last two-and-a-half minutes. That?s all very valuable information because that means they?re spending that much time on it and there?s value to what the retailer is giving the consumer. So that means you?re on the right track as far as what you?re developing for the consumer.

?

EM: Each of these new forms of media seem to have their own rules of etiquette?you shouldn?t pin too much on Pinterest, you shouldn?t overcrowd people on Facebook. How can proximity-marketing users figure out how to get their message right in terms of tone, frequency, and content? What?s the secret to engaging someone?

MZ: I think it?s to be as non-intrusive as possible. Again, if the content is valuable, that?s the key. The reason people get tired of being bombarded, I think, is because 80 to 85 percent of the content they?re getting hit with is not really that relevant. It?s not exciting enough to be bombarded with. But if somebody?s giving great stuff, that?s important. And that goes to a business?s strategic objectives and what their initiatives are. If their strategic business objective is to increase per-head spending when somebody?s in the store or increase basket size, as a grocery store would say, then they need to structure their content around that.

?

EM: Speaking of customers being in the store, there?s been a lot of news coverage lately about ?showrooming?the trend of smartphone users going into a retailer?s shop to test out a product they?ve seen online, then buying it on another e-commerce site?and the effects on big and small businesses. A recent Wall Street Journal article talked about proximity marketing being one possible solution for retailers. What have you seen? Don?t these also fall into the category of possibly also being intrusive?

MZ: Not necessarily, because with showrooming [customers] are in the store. The goal is to get you to spend money in the store and not go in and look at stuff then go and buy it somewhere else. So if they?re served an offer that?s made while they?re showrooming, you may, for instance, be able to get an offer relevant to that item, or an item, and provide them with a price that?s listed to engage them with the proximity solution while they?re in the store.

?

EM: What have been some of the biggest challenges that you?ve faced with this type of technology?

MZ: The biggest challenges have been that there are a lot of options out there from a mobile perspective. There?s proximity, as we do it, via WiFi and Bluetooth, there?s geofencing, there?s just straight text, there?s app-based stuff?there?s a lot of noise in this space. And so the biggest challenge has been that there?s all these other options and getting retailers to take an integrated approach. There?s no one silver bullet. If you really want to communicate with as many people as possible at the right times, you probably want to leverage multiple types of mobile technology offerings to get content into people?s hands. We actually offer all of the above in our solution.

?

EM: Where do you see this type of technology five years from now?

MZ: It?s projected to reach tens of billions of dollars just in the U.S. It varies whether that might be through the purchasing of solutions like ours, or a digital/mobile ad spend. I think that it?s probably going to move a little slower, but the potential of those numbers is certainly there. And as consumers adopt the method that they like the best, or the multiple methods they like the best, I think you?ll see it grow rapidly. It?s like anything else?it?s all about consumer adoption. That?s what really drives those big numbers. If the consumers want the content delivered to them, then retailers and brands eventually will have to deliver their content that way?if they want to stay competitive.

Mompreneur x 2: PosePrints Keeps It in the Family - ActSeed

PosePrints - ActSeed Entrepreneur Group memberWe love a good story, and PosePrints is a great one to share with you. A mother-daughter team has combined creativity and business acumen to transform a popular traditional pastime into an online business.

There is a significant niche in the stationery business ? people who don?t want something ?off the shelf? where customization means a few foil-stamped words. PosePrints has applied the concept of ?paper dolls? into an online service where we can create lookalike caricatures of ourselves that can then be printed on stationery, business cards, wedding invitations and a variety of other merchandise.

PosePrints was launched five years ago by a mother-daughter team, Denise Foster and Jen Harland Moss. The duo has bootstrapped their company to profitability and is now planning for significant growth into international markets and expansion to new services such as enabling customers to customize their lookalike images for their social media pages and smart phones.PosePrints - ActSeed Entrepreneur Group member

Innovative companies like PosePrints continue to help the internet evolve as a creative outlet to complement popular offline pastimes like scrapbooking and paper dolls. Below is a brief Q&A with Jen and Denise where they share their entrepreneurial journey with us. They have achieved the oft-elusive five year milestone for a startup, but their journey is just beginning.

Q. Describe your ?Eureka Moment?. What was the market opportunity that drove your decision to form PosePrints?

A. Jen and I had discussed starting a stationery company for years, but it was when Jen mentioned offering her look-alike caricature drawings that we had our ?Eureka Moment.? We had sent off her drawings to large card companies when she was in high school, but years later realized we could create our own niche in the e-Commerce world. Once we pinpointed our business concept ? offering unique, look-alike caricature products that customers can design on their own ? we were set.

Q. How did you fund the company to its current state?

A. Jen and I have funded the company to its current state, and we both have other jobs which have allowed us to do this. In 2009, we entered the wholesale market with the idea of selling packaged cards. After an expensive lesson, we returned our focus to doing what PosePrints did best ? allowing our online customers to create their caricatures and design personalized products.

Q. How important is planning and preparation to your company?s success?

A. PosePrints? planning took years from conception to launch. There was no former track record we had to follow, and, so we spent many long hours planning with our webmaster exactly how the company would operate from beginning to end.

Forming relationships with valuable strategic partners was part of the plan from the beginning because we knew where our strengths and weaknesses were. So that Jen was not locked in a cage drawing 24/7, we knew a major part of the plan involved automation of the design process.

Q. How long did it take to get your idea into the market from initial concept to first customer?

A. The idea of bringing Jen?s fun and unique drawing style to the public had been a topic we had discussed for years. Once we found our first partner in 2006, a web expert to write the code that would transform our ideas into a website, it was another year before PosePrints formally launched. We were highly selective on who we would take on as our printing partner. Quality and customer service were at the top of our list of priorities. Forming a partnership with a local printing partner who would print and ship the orders took months. Sales were made within a couple days of PosePrints? July, 2007 launch.

Q. What influence have the internet and social media had on the way you are marketing, selling and supporting your business?

A. The internet and social marketing are two of the driving forces behind the success and growth of PosePrints. The company is solely internet-based. All orders are placed through the website after the customer has co-created their own product. PosePrints has a Facebook following along with Twitter and LinkedIn. Customer support is both online and via a toll-free line.

Growing the business exponentially will heavily involve the internet and social media tools.

Q. Describe the challenges you faced as you built your customer base, including defining the customer target, establishing the right price and pricing strategy and of course, closing the first few deals.

A. The challenge to build a customer base for an e-commerce company is not easy, especially for a small, self-funded, start-up stationery company. In the beginning, we were able to define our target market fairly easily because almost all of our products were sold to women between the ages of 22 and 50. Five years later, we continue to face the challenge of spreading the PosePrints word on a national basis, and are planning the process of branching out internationally.PosePrints - ActSeed Entrepreneur Group member

Establishing our price took thought and analysis because there was only one other online company that offered the kind of personalization similar to PosePrints. Because of the uniqueness of the company, PosePrints has received a fair amount of editorial coverage.

Q. What techniques have you used to establish credibility in the eyes of customers, investors, partners, personnel and the general public?

A. Our customer service is excellent and, in the five years since launch, we have received rave reviews for our products and our assistance. Jen and I are easy to reach via email.

Q. What is the most important thing people never tell you about?building an early-stage company?

A. If you have a vision, and are willing to put in a lot of time without pay, great things can happen! PosePrints has survived through the downslide of the economy, when sales did drop, but we did not give up on our vision and have kept moving forward. We have proven that we are a sustainable business, and, in July, 2012, we celebrated our 5 year anniversary as a going concern.

Will the U.N. pull the plug on observers in Syria?

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The Security Council will most likely not renew the mandate of the U.N. observer mission in Syria later this month, which would require it to pull out of the conflict-torn country, France's envoy to the United Nations said on Thursday.

"I think the mission will disappear on the 19th of August," French Ambassador Gerard Araud, president of the Security Council this month, told reporters. The mandate of the U.N. mission in Syria, known as UNSMIS, expires on that date.

Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin criticized Araud for declaring UNSMIS effectively dead and made clear Moscow would "strongly urge the secretary-general (Ban Ki-moon) to continue with the monitoring component" of UNSMIS after August 19.

In order for the monitors to remain in Syria after August 19, the council would have to adopt a new resolution to that effect. Araud made clear it was difficult to imagine the council reaching agreement to do so.

Ban is expected to deliver a report next week to the 15-nation council with recommendations regarding the future of UNSMIS.

Given international mediator Kofi Annan's decision to step down at the end of the month, which was announced earlier on Thursday, U.N. diplomats said the prospects for securing a diplomatic solution and a truce that could be monitored by UNSMIS were not good.

The U.N. Security Council extended the three-month mandate of the U.N. observer mission in Syria for another 30 days last month. It will decide in a few weeks whether to extend it again.

Araud said the situation on the ground in Syria would have to improve significantly in order for the council to reach an agreement that would keep UNSMIS in place.

Some Western diplomats say they are loath to keep the mission in Syria given that there is no truce for the observers to monitor and neither side in the conflict appears to want a diplomatic solution to the crisis. The United States, they said, was most eager to end the mission's mandate.

The European Union humanitarian affairs commissioner, Kristalina Georgieva, said on Wednesday that UNSMIS' presence had been beneficial for aid delivery.

DIVISIONS 'AS GREAT AS EVER'

Araud described the Security Council as "irreconcilably deadlocked" on the issue of Syria because two of the five permanent veto-wielding members were too far apart in their views for the council to reach an agreement. He did not name the two states, but it was clear he meant Russia and the United States.

Russia, along with China, has vetoed three resolutions on Syria that would have condemned the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and threatened it with possible sanctions.

"The divisions are as great as ever," Araud said. "We can predict a clash."

"The Security Council is deadlocked," he added. "Three vetoes enable us to say that."

The United States and Britain suggested it was Russia and China that undermined Annan's peace efforts by vetoing attempts to pressure Assad to halt his 17-month crackdown against an increasingly militarized opposition determined to oust him. Assad's ally Russia said it was the Western powers that undermined Annan.

UNSMIS' 300 unarmed observers, whose role had been to monitor a failed April 12 ceasefire in Syria brokered by Annan, suspended most activities on June 16 because of increased risk from rising violence. Half of the monitors have already pulled out, but diplomats said there were over 72 civilian staff working on a political solution and monitoring rights problems.

Pfizer Q2 profit beats forecasts

Pfizer, the biggest US drug maker, said Tuesday its second-quarter profit had surged 25 percent from a year earlier, boosted by cost-cutting that offset lower sales.

Pfizer said net income was $3.25 billion in the April-June period, compared with $2.6 billion in the same quarter last year.

Excluding special items, earnings were 62 cents per share, well above the average analyst estimate of 54 cents.

Revenue fell 9.0 percent to $15.0 billion, better than expected, as Pfizer continued to suffer from the loss of exclusivity for its blockbuster anti-cholesterol drug Lipitor.

The New York-based company took a $1.8 billion, or 11 percent, hit on revenues from losses of exclusivity on products, mainly Lipitor in most major markets.

In the United States, revenues fell 15 percent to $5.7 billion, due mainly to the November 2011 loss of Lipitor exclusivity in its home market that has allowed generic versions to compete.

International revenues slipped 5.0 percent to $9.3 billion as sales were hit by unfavorable foreign-exchange rates.

In emerging markets, sales grew 14 percent, driven largely by China and Russia.

The quarter's earnings were boosted by a reduction in costs of 16 percent, or $1.6 billion; a buyback of 398 million shares; and a $581 million gain from discontinued operations from the sale of its Nutrition business.

In April Pfizer sold its infant food maker Pfizer Nutrition to Swiss food giant Nestle for $11.85 billion.

Pfizer said that it intends to file for an initial public offering of its Animal Health unit in August, with an IPO targeted for the first half of 2013.

Up to a 20 percent ownership stake will be offered in the stand-alone public company, to be called Zoetis.

"Overall, I am confident that Pfizer is well-positioned for long-term success given the potential of our innovative late-stage and emerging pipeline" of products and strong cash flow, among other factors, Ian Read, Pfizer's chairman and chief executive, said in a statement.

Pfizer reaffirmed its 2012 forecast of earnings per share of $2.14 to $2.24, and revenues between $58.0 to $60.0 billion.

Shares were up 0.1 percent at $23.74 in pre-market trading.
