Skateboard is a very popular and adventurous sports among the young generation today and more & more children are showing their interest in it. But before purchasing your first board, you should ask other boarders about what they like and don't like about their boards.

Usually the average board is 8 inches wide. And if you are a beginner, then go for wider one, as they are more stable and comfortable during learning stage. But do keep in mind that extra wide boards may also cause a hindrance to perform skateboard tricks. The most of the boards comes in market have raised front and side walls. The deeper board helps professionals to perform more sharp and extraordinary tricks whereas shallow boards are good for beginners. Remember too flat boards are very difficult to handle and you won't be able to perform much tricks on them.

Wheels, which makes you roll and perform tricks are the important part of a good skateboard. They are made up of hard plastic. But the harder the plastic the harder it becomes to roll. The skateboard available in market comes with 90a hardness. And if you want to use a skateboard in floor ramps and grass, go for 97a hardness in wheels. For beginners start with larger wheels, as smaller wheels will make you closer to the ground and hence difficult it to learn.

If you have done a good research on skateboards, you would find that skateboards comes in three different styles, i.e. street, ramp and longboards. Street and ramp style boards are usually of same size and length, the only difference is the size of wheel. Street boards have larger wheels whereas ramp floor boards comes in smaller size wheel. Longboards are very different from street and ramp style boards. They are longer in size and used for downhill tricks or transportation.


Brands manufacturing skateboards are also important when buying skate boards. You should consult your peers and other boarders about brand they are using along with skating accessories like pads and helmet etc. If you are more fashion and style freak, you can also buy a blank board and later can customize it with stylish skateboard stickers.

Your height and weight is also going to be part of your buying decisions. In spite of types of board - street or long- some skateboards are made to address the weight and size of a person. So make sure to read the manufacturer's intention and category before making a purchase.

Complete skateboards come with a wheels, trucks, bearing, gripped deck, skateboard clothes and safety kit. The price range of these assembled boards is usually $50 to over $100, depending upon the quality of the material used. Longboards are always more expensive than other skateboards. So other important point worth noting here is that if you are beginner, buy a cheap skate deck for yourself, as you may fall more often and will end up ruining your expensive board.
