A Fort Worth man was sentenced to 22 years in prison for raping a woman at gunpoint while he was on parole for a similar assault.
Curtis Roscoe Stafford, 49, must also serve the four years remaining on his previous sentence after jurors convicted him of aggravated sexual assault Thursday.
In January 2011, Stafford raped a woman on a secluded dead end street in South Fort Worth after she accepted a ride from him.
After the assault, the woman tossed her underwear out of the car?s window and reported the crime the next day. Investigators discovered her pink panties and collected DNA later matched with Stafford?s.
During the trial, jurors heard that Stafford was convicted of a similar crime that occurred in April 1985. He robbed an Arlington store at knifepoint and raped an employee on the floor behind the counter.
At trial, the defense attempted to discredit the victim and claimed the act was consensual.
?The jury?s decision proves that anybody can be a victim of sexual assault, regardless of their lifestyle or position in society,? Assistant District Attorney Carl Lazarus said. ?In the end, the jurors only cared about the evidence.?
